the auratic mother: an homage to walter benjamin | 2004
Live Worms Gallery, Group Exhibition, San Francisco, CA
"The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction" (1935), (often translated as The Work of Art in the Age of Its Technological Reproducibility) by Walter Benjamin, is an essay of cultural criticism which proposes that the mechanical reproduction of a work of art devalues the aura of the artifact's uniqueness as art.
The image is of my mother and myself on the day that I came home from the Children’s Hospital in San Francisco, CA. This was our loft on Market Street. The original media was a negative. This was then printed in a darkroom and given to me by my estranged father in my late twenties. Until then I had not seen a photo of myself so little, never mind on that day. These images use that original negative as their source.
