gravity project | 2020

Gravity Project is a one-person dialogue with the ground. The work is conceived as a participatory, instruction-based creative action. It consists of excavating a 3’ x 6’ x 6’ cavity in the ground and suspending the excavated soil in a canopy, which is itself suspended above. The location of this mediated dialogue is chosen by the individual.

Gravity Project is conceived as a manual endeavor. Use of machinery is discouraged but not forbidden. Parts can be ordered as a kit or made by the individual provided the spirit of the action is upheld.

Upon completion written, photographic and video documentation is submitted online for verification, and the documentation subsequently becomes material for further works. In this manner a single, individual action becomes part of an evolving, collective meditation of body, boundary and ground.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Manually dig a 3-feet wide by 6-foot long by 7-foot deep rectilinear cavity in the ground
2. Assemble and install plate structure
3. Replace 1’ of soil into cavity
4. Erect stakes
5. Suspend canvas canopy
6. Place excavated soil on suspended canvas
